The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is spearheading the transformative I-75 Modernization Project using an innovative Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM) contracting method. This ambitious initiative focuses on Segment 3, a critical stretch spanning 5.5 miles from 13 Mile Road to 8 Mile Road in Madison Heights, Royal Oak, and Hazel Park, Oakland County. The project aims to improve connectivity and safety through significant upgrades, including:
- Adding a High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and general-purpose lane up to 12 Mile Road.
- Reconstructing existing freeway lanes.
- Replacing 28 structures, including six pedestrian bridges.
- Implementing advanced drainage systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) upgrades, and community-driven aesthetic improvements.
The Challenge
MDOT faced a monumental task in managing this large-scale, multifaceted infrastructure project. Challenges included:
- Coordinating construction activities across multiple stakeholders and contractors.
- Ensuring rigorous adherence to quality standards for inspection and testing.
- Maintaining real-time visibility and effective communication across teams.
- Handling the complexity of data collection, analysis, and reporting for compliance and decision-making.
